I know the website is new but I am curious to see if anyone has encountered a reliable online source for gut health. I have been listening to podcasts and they all seem to be just advertising. Trying to focus on brain health….
Any thoughts?
Gut Health
The gut and the brain are most definitely connected! We've probably all heard of the “gut-brain” connection at some point. From what I've read/learned, the gut is actually known as the “second brain” because they work so closely together to maintain our immune systems. Our gut microbiome (whether it's healthy or not) has been linked to SO many things, from obesity to irritable bowel and even to our mental health.
There are SO many things that can affect our gut health and cause “bad” bacteria to overrun the good/healthy bacteria: antibiotics, stress, activity levels, etc. I did some quick research online and found that diet can help considerably. One thing in particular I found was that reducing dietary intake of Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols (FODMAPs) can definitely improve health. Some examples of FODMAP foods are: Milk, Onions, Honey, Wheat, but there are several others.
Instead, we should focus on eating lots of FIBER to include fiber rich plants (spinach, kale, etc - lots of veggies!) to keep our guts healthy.
In addition, exercise also helps improve our gut health, as well as limiting antibiotics (to when you really need them), as we all know what these can do to our bellies.
Lastly, reducing stress has a HUGE impact on gut health. Make sure you take time to de-stress and exercise self-care: meditation, grounding exercises, getting enough sleep, etc.
New drug has dubious potential to help Alzheimer’s patients, but these other ideas could change lives. If you could invest $56 billion each year in improving health care for older adults, how would you spend… it… On a hugely expensive medication with questionable efficacy—or something else?
